Move a tree or a young shrub

This is a tree planted recently (a year or two), be it an ornamental tree, a fruit tree, an ornamental shrub or a rose bush. And you have the choice of the time.

The problem is simple and easy to solve. Wait for the leaves to fall (November current). Tear up mutilating as few roots as possible and replant immediately, or at least within a short time. If you have to wait for some time before replanting, put the plant in a gauge, that is to say in a temporary location, its roots being covered with soil.

You can operate during all the rest of the vegetation, at wholesale from November to March. Reduce the antler significantly since the roots have been partially cut during uprooting.

This is an old plant and you are not caught by the weather

Prepare the plant for this move. practice, preferably in winter, at a distance of about 50 cm to 1 m from the trunk, a circular trench of small width and depth of 50 cm to 1 m. The presence of the roots will guide you to the depth. Some trees or shrubs have roots that are localized at shallow depths; others, roots that sink into the soil. The maximum of roots must be cut off. The specialists call this operation the cernage.

Once the trench is complete, line the outer wall with a plastic sheet and top with loose earth, rich in potting soil. The roots grow quickly in this place and weave a sort of net that binds the earth.

The next winter, open a new trench, but this time, behind the plastic sheet, and release the root ball from below to cut (if there are any) the pivoting roots, those that sink vertically into the ground. Remove the tree or shrub with its clod of soil, after carefully consolidated the motte by surrounding it with canvases so that it breaks up as little as possible.

Transport everything to the new location and plant according to the usual rules.

The big obstacle to this kind of operation is the weight of the mound. If it is a shrub and we could be content with a low volume mound, the weight remains in the field of the possibilities of a trip "by arms" by two or three people. But we quickly reach very important weight for big trees. One cubic meter of earth weighs about a ton and a half. Mechanized lifting and transport means then become indispensable.

What trees and shrubs can be moved this way? Let's say, all in a general way, although some species are much better than others.

How old can a tree or shrub be transplanted?

There are no rules. The less mature a plant, the greater the chances of success. But what is also important is how to move a tree that has reached a high volume, especially in a garden where the possibilities of using lifting and transport equipment are difficult.

A tree is rarely move beyond ten years.

An operation not to be neglected when transplanting a tree: a guying preventing it from moving under the action of the wind, especially in places where it blows violently. Not only is the tree likely to be recumbent, but the action of the wind is detrimental to a good recovery. The roots are displaced and lose close contact with the soil they need.

This is an older plant and you have no choice of when

Any reason: construction, road crossing, various works, etc., requires the rapid removal of the tree or shrub, otherwise it will be purely and simply deleted. We must act immediately.

The operation is always delicate and even more if it is to occur in the spring or summer, when the plants are in full vegetation. The chances of success are then greatly diminished.

In the case of a plant with deciduous foliage, remove it (in several times if the time allowed). Then tear off the roots as little as possible, and with a clod as much as you can.

Replant immediately. Reduce the antlers. Shrink or guard securely. Do not spare watering.

Proceed in the same way (without stripping of course) for a plant with evergreen (conifers or other). In addition to watering your foot, spray water on the foliage (we say basiner in technical terms), very often, every evening if possible.
