Pruning a tree can take different forms depending on the desired results and the needs of the moment. The different intaglio techniques allow to support the tree in its growth. This is not the case with pruning which is a more radical method. In particular, it avoids all the dangers presented by the branches of the tree. Here is a list of the different sizes!
Training size
It intervenes to structure the tree from the start of its growth. It is in fact intended to remove the secondary branches and preserve the carpenters. It is aesthetic and it balances your tree. It is mainly practiced on young trees to sculpt the shape of that in the years to come.
Crown elevation size
The crown elevation pruning is made to help the tree coexist with its environment. This is particularly true in an urban environment invaded by buildings, streets, telephone and electric wires.
It can take two forms:
- Either, you form a trunk without low branches on a young tree so that its silhouette is higher.
- Either, you reduce the low branches of an old tree in order to clear the environment of the latter: poor visibility, pedestrian crossing, etc.
It can also be useful to avoid large cuts by acting only on small, low branches.
Crown reduction size on sap extractor
Unlike the previous pruning, this consists of reducing the volume of the crown and therefore of the tree, always in order to adapt it as best as possible to the place. You can also do this for branches touching electric cables, for example. She can recover a tree damaged by hail or wind and restore it to a harmonious silhouette. It is carried out on a sap extractor to promote healing of the cuts.
Thinning pruning
The objective is to ventilate the tree and the crown. We must remove suckers, dead wood and excess branches that grow poorly. The light penetrates inside and preserves your tree from fungi and pests.
Companion size
It is suitable for old trees, declining or aging subjects. It is a soft pruning which consists in removing branches or dead wood.
Sanitary size
We talk about proper maintenance pruning when your tree shows signs of weakness. You then cut dead wood, diseased and necrotic branches, branches too close to each other and poorly oriented. This then decreases the risk of falling branches.
Architectural size
This size is purely aesthetic, it offers the possibility of giving or keeping the shape of the tree which is often geometric. It is a way to prune your shrubs or ornamental trees nicely.
Severe pruning or restructuring
This pruning is certainly the most drastic one with cutting unnecessary and troublesome branches. This is the case in urban areas when they prevent traffic on the sidewalk or obstruct the passage of electric wires. You can also perform this pruning in order to develop the formation of leaves or suckers. If you cut back branches from the trunk, we speak of cutting back. To change the shape of the tree, instead bet on the reasoned or soft cut.
