The division of the tufts allows, at the same time, the reproduction of the species and the regeneration of the parent strains.

Requirements for division of tufts

Despite its ease of execution, this mode of multiplication must be carried out under the following conditions to be successful.

Each fragment detached from the parent strain must contain at least one visible and living bud and some roots at its point of sectioning. It must, in the case of evergreen species, bear several leaves.

The division of the tufts should be practiced:

· In autumn or spring, for certain perennials, such as those of the genus Aubrietia and most of those of the genera of the Composaceae family.

· After flowering, for many perennials, such as those of the genera Iris and Peonia. It is recommended to practice the division of the tufts, if possible, during the period of vegetative rest.

Practice of division of tufts

For plants grown in pots, it is preferable to remove them, which makes it possible to free the elements to be divided from the soil which covers their base and to perfectly identify the place of the mother plant where the sectioning must be carried out.

The operation must be carried out with a sharp tool, for example a knife, in order to obtain clear areas of separation.

Divided items must:

For species grown in pots, be placed in pots of sufficient diameter, containing an appropriate earthy mixture, then be the subject of one or more repots before being put in the pots where they will continue their growth as adult plants ;

· For species grown in the ground, be placed, until complete recovery, in substantial and cool soil, before being permanently planted.
