A few clearings, a few more degrees, no doubt, spring is coming little by little. It’s good for morale and good for nature. But it also means that it’s time to get active in the garden! Plants, shrubs, flowers or vegetable garden, everyone is on the front …

The garden and the vegetable patch in March: be careful!

It is the sowing season, in the ground for hardy species and under shelter for others, more fragile. The periods of frost are not over, the cold is still very present in a good part of France. However, some vegetables are not afraid of cold snaps, so you can plant the following vegetables in the ground as early as March:

  • Garlic
  • Shallot
  • Potatoes
  • Chive
  • Artichoke

For seedlings under cover, let’s go to sow seeds of eggplant, carrots, radishes, and even tomatoes. As for the rest of the garden, you can start pruning your trees, shrubs and other roses! Be careful though to wait for the thaw, depending on the geographical area in which you are … Bare root fruit trees are ready to be planted, your hedge also and it is high time to clean up! Weed your beds, plant your flowers or perennials, your garden will (finally) come back to life …

The garden and the vegetable patch in April: it’s spring!

That’s it, spring is really here! The days are getting longer, the temperatures are rising and with all that, the desire to scratch the earth and enjoy the garden and the vegetable patch is once again felt … But it is also a period during which you have to be vigilant, always depending on the weather. region in which you live, the last frosts have not yet passed (hello Ice Saints). You can start removing the winter protection from your flowers and shrubs from the 15th of the month and sow summer flowers to fill your beds and mulch the foot of the hedges while the earth is still wet and before the first heat. As for the vegetable garden, it’s time to transplant your tomato and eggplant seedlings. It is also finally time to sow in the ground:

  • Swiss chard
  • Rocket
  • The peas
  • Potatoes (to be planted in stages for multiple harvests)

Also remember to thin out too dense seedlings, a step that tears the heart the first time … It is a question of choosing the strongest plant (s) and pulling out the others so that they do not suffocate it. You can of course replant them in other pots if you don’t have the heart to throw them away.

The garden and the vegetable patch in May: anything goes!

Finally ! There are no longer any restrictions on planting in the ground from mid-May, phew. On the other hand, it is too late to sow certain fruits and vegetables, which will not come out until the fall. You can therefore buy plants directly from the garden center or plant your seedlings that have grown up. Consider staggering seed crops such as radishes, which you can sow most of the summer, in order to enjoy them regularly as an aperitif or in a salad! So plant your feet of tomatoes, zucchini, eggplant, peppers, salads (also staggered), your cabbage, your squash and whatever makes you happy. For the rest of the garden, remember to rid your plants of faded flowers by leaving the foliage and water well (ideally in the evening) throughout the coming summer …
